Uncertainty looms over Gambia’s Nations Cup dream

Thursday, June 21, 2007

The Gambia’s Scorpions salvaged a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde on Saturday in Praia but uncertainty continues to loom over Scorpions hopes of reaching their first-ever Nations Cup dream in Ghana 2008.

The Gambia needed the whole three points to keep their hopes alive, but the goalless draw encounter which was followed by Guinea’s emphatic 2-0 victory over Algeria in Algiers on the same night has put a great dent in the Scorpions faint hope of reaching the 2008 African Nations Cup finals holding in Ghana.

Saturday’s fixture was a rather bitter nightmare for the visiting Scorpions who regretfully lost their starting goalkeeper, Musa Bajaha, due to the lack of available flight in Dakar, before losing two key players during the keenly contested fixture.

Skipper Ebou Sillah and versatile Dawda Bah were sent off in the second interval of the match shortly before the game wrapped up in a stalemate.

Gambia could still realise their dream in a photo finish should they manage to beat Algeria with more goals in their Banjul tie next September and hope that Cape Verde upset the favorites and current leaders, Guinea, in Conakry.
