Ganyie Touray Takes Over CRR Governorship

Friday, June 22, 2007

According to official sources, Mr. Ganyie Touray has been appointed as the new Governor of Central River Region (CRR).

Mr. Touray is said to have received his appointment letter on Tuesday. He replaces Mr. Amulie Janneh who retired from service.

Ganyie Touray worked with the then Cooperative from 1975 to 1977. From 1977 to 1979, he went to Sweden to study Management. Soon after that, precisely between 1980 and 1981, he went to the United Kingdom to do Higher Diploma in Business Management.

After what appears to be the period of his academic exploits, he returned to take part in the 1982 general elections, contesting unsuccessfully as an Independent Candidate in Saloum Constituency. From 1982 to 1984 he worked at the Seagull cold store.

Mr. Touray was an executive member of the then ruling PPP. He also joined NADD briefly before resigning in August 2006 to join the ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and construction (APRC).

When contacted by this paper, Mr. Touray confirmed his appointment, saying: “I thank God, the president and the Secretary of State for Local Government and Lands for the confidence they have in me. It is very challenging and I need the co-operation of all the people in CRR to meet the challenge,” adding that he knew the country very well as he had traveled the length and breath of it.
