Hit & Run Driver Gets Over Four Years

Friday, June 22, 2007

One Sulayman Bah had earlier this week embraced the warmth of justice when he was sentenced to spend over four years in jail for causing the death of one Kunta Sanneh in a road accident.

Bah had pleaded guilty to a charge of negligently driving a van and without due consideration to other road users thereby causing the death of Kunta. He was involved in the accident when he was without a license and refused to stop after the accident which occurred along the Banjul-Serekunda highway.

Before the four-year-and-six-month jail term was handed down to Bah, he passionately pleaded with the magistrate to temper justice with mercy since, in his own words, he was a breadwinner.

According to principal magistrate Moses Richards, he’s heard the plea of Bah but that his victim also had similar responsibilities and that being a breadwinner is not a license for violating the laws of the land.

Bah was consequently sentenced to pay a fine of D15,000 in default to serve six months in prisons. He was also fined D20,000 or spend 18-month imprisonment and would also serve a 12-month mandatory jail term.

The sentences should run concurrently and with hard labour.
