Gambia in must-win match today

Thursday, July 5, 2007

Beaten by star-studded Mexico 3-0 in their debut game, The Gambia U-20 team will return to action tonight when they take on fellow first-time finalists New Zealand at 21:00 hrs in Toronto.

Both sides lost their first fixtures and a defeat for either side tonight will translate into an early elimination from the world’s second most prestigious football fiesta.

The Darling Scorpions created a good number of chances against the Mexicans, and they will come up against another positive-thinking side in the New Zealanders, who will unarguably strive through thick-and-thin to bounce back after the grave 0-2 defeat at the hands of the Portuguese.

With chances likely to come fast and furious, whichever side can improve on slackness in front of the net will have the advantage.

Gambia know that a loss could very well leave them at the edge of the precipice (that is heading home), while full points would allow New Zealand to feel more relaxed heading into their final contest against Mexico.
