The Association of Small-scale Enterprises in Tourism, ASSET, is adopting restructuring measures geared towards wider cultural diversification following the recent establishment of the first-ever Tourism Information Centre.
The centre called Cultural Encounters is aimed at show-casing the cultural diversity of The Gambia through arts & craft, community tourism as well promoting cultural encounters between hosts and guests.
Speaking in a press conference at the centre last week, the Development Manager of ASSET, Mr. Dawda Niang, posited that ASSET is out to support small-scale enterprises in tourism to trade fairly and pursue sustainable development which, he said, contributes to the conservation of physical environment and the socio-economic advancement of The Gambia. He added that his association also provides assistance to their member’s vis-à-vis product development, marketing, training, quality control and access to finance.
“We also work towards promoting a positive networking amongst our members,” stated Mr. Niang.
The Cultural Encounters centre, he said, is not an exclusive tourist domain but is also open to the general public.
“The place is a good meeting point and it’s Mango Café provides snacks and drinks in a convivial and relaxed atmosphere. The students are especially encouraged to visit it. We are also calling on all visitors to The Gambia whether you are an adventure or package tourist or independent traveler to visit the centre. We also encourage local and international NGOs, diplomats to visit us from 10am to 7pm on everyday of the week except Sunday,” he said.
Also speaking in the press conference, the Marketing and Event Officer of ASSET, Mr. Seedy Conteh, pointed out that they want to interact with people to know what their expectations are.
