The Point is privy to information that 50% of the country’s telecommunication and cellular companies, GAMTEL and GAMCEL, have been sold to Spectrum Company, a Lebanese-owned company.
The sale, said to have taken place with effect from August 1st 2007, is believed to have effected changes in the management of the hitherto national enterprises. As part of the terms of the sale, Spectrum is to put a management team, which is going to work alongside officials of the two companies, in charge of the management of the affairs of the companies.
To this end a German company called Detecon will oversee the 50% share of Spectrum.
Repeated efforts made by this paper to ascertain the story from officials of both companies and government proved futile as they all declined to comment on the issue.
