Defence Deplores Slow Pace of Proceedings

The defence counsel representing ex-NIA officers in the protracted case against some former NIA operatives has strongly complained about what he termed as the snail’s pace of proceedings. Defence Counsel Lamin Jobarteh argued that the charges against the accused persons are criminal charges which have placed a heavy burden on his clients for a long time now.

Responding to the complaint, the state counsel, A.S. Omar, stated that the proceedings must be discreetly taken and the exhibits tendered in court for fair justice delivery.

In yesterday’s sitting, the state counsel tendered the cautionary and voluntary statements of the accused persons, which have been admitted in evidence.

The six accused persons: Lamin Drammeh, Basiru Jabang, Lamin Sanneh, Kajali Jawara, Fabakary Barrow and Salimina Drammeh were charged for conspiracy, theft, abuse of office and criminal tresspass.

The charges were brought following the striping of complainants Frank Mahleh and Nicolas Wespal, German nationals, of US$206,000, D1100, eight pieces of diamond, mobile phones, and electrical shavers, at Senegambia hotel.

The case resumes 1st October 2007 for continuation of hearing.
