JOHN MENDY: 2007 National Sport Journalists Referee of the year

Tuesday, January 8, 2008

In the famous year of 1994, this man took up the whistle with a view to making mark in football. But he started as a trainee in female football. In the same 1994, he started officiating Nawettan matches in the Greater Banjul Area.

As transition brings success to continuity, he was moved to the third division qualifiers in 1995 as central and assistant referees. A year later, he was elevated to the Division Two championship officiating matches as well as assisting central referees sometimes.

In 1998, the referee’s association rated him very high and promoted him as central referee in the Division Two league.

This great person struggled and strived very hard to be included in the GFA Division One League. This came to effect in 1999. Blending determination and commitment with fair play, he was in 2002 enriched as a FIFA international referee. From then, he continued to shape himself better and tightened his belt to face the international scene.

In 2002, he was a FIFA referee debutant serving as 4th referee during the match between Guinea Bissau and Mali. Of course it was a highly rated match as it was the Germany 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

He strengthened his gains and was entrusted to officiate an Olympic qualifiers match in 2003 in Abidjan.

In the same 2003, he was sent to Benin to be the boss in the field in a World cup qualifying match.

Other feathers were added on his hat as he was the officiating referee during an African champion’s league match in Tunis in 2004

In the Liberia/Congo World Cup qualifying match in 2005, this guy was the 4th referee.
