An education campaign on the dangers posed by land mines last week commenced in Foni.
According to Lamin Gibba, the campaign manager, the project is funded by the UNICEF Gambia office with Nova Scotia-Gambia Association (NSGA) as the implementing partner. He added that the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) will also be part of the campaign.
The campaign, according to Mr Gibba, targets forty-three border communities in the area and is aimed at creating adequate sensitisation and information dissemination programmes on the hazards and risks associated with land mines, especially on children and farmers, who are the frequent users of the borders where the mines are usually buried.
Gibba further described the move as quite significant, noting that it will serve as a guarding tool against landmines within the border communities. According to him, the campaign will incorporate the provision of leaflets and the erection of some landmine billboards.
