Future in Our Hands, a Sweden-based charitable organisation, recently organised a series of training workshops for teachers in Region six.

The training, described as in-service training, is geared towards equipping teachers with the vital know-how to instruct their students with proficiency. The workshops were held at Koro Jula Kunda, Koba Kunda, St. George’s and St. Joesph Lower Basic Schools.

Mr. Amadou Sambou, of Future in Our Hands, said that this is important, for the mere fact that nowadays students cannot read or write well, and as a result, students fail exams.

“It is as a result of this that we think this training is a necessity. We provide the participants with ideas that students need to build up their capacities and thus ensure greater participation in class,” he said.

“We introduced this to help children to read and write,” he added. He revealed that this programme was initiated by Future in Our Hands with the support of Department of State for Education.

According to him, a couple from Sweden, Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, recently visited and conducted a survey on Gambian schools, in which they realised there is the need to conduct such training.

Ms Aminata Secka, also of Future in Our Hands, revealed that the same training had been organized in Regions two and three.

She further stated that after the survey conducted by the couple, they find it necessary, in line with the policy that the Government has put in place, to conduct such training.

“I would like to advise teachers to make the best use of the opportunity and ensure that their students benefit from the knowledge gained. I believe that with such knowledge, teachers can go back to the schools and make a bid difference,” she concluded.
