The Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) will lower its national flag at half-mast in commemoration of the 61st
anniversary of the ‘228 Incident’ which occurred on 28 February, 1947, according to reports from the Taiwanese Embassy in
Banjul.

The ‘228 Incident’ observed by the Taiwanese people on February 28 in rememberance of bloody crackdown on demonstrators and
local elites, by the Chinese Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) party, under Chiang Kai-shek’s administration in 1947.

The incident broke out after a woman was beaten for selling “black-market” cigarettes in Taipei City at night on  27
February, 1947.

The brutality sparked a nationwide disorder and the slaughter of tens of thousands of Taiwanese people at the hands of KMT
troops.

The commemoration is arranged to heal the wounds of 1947 and gear up for reconciliation with ‘228 Incident’ victims and
members of their families.
