The menace of Area Boys

Thursday, March 13, 2008
Editor,

I wish to use your respectable media to bring to the notice of the police of the unbecoming attitude of "area boys". They are mostly found around car-parks and market paces.

They engage in all forms of banditry and sorts. Pathetically, many of these are young, energetic men, who, apparently for some reason, feel they can only make life better for themselves by indulging in that kind of practice. But unfortunately, innocent passenger and buyers have increasingly become their targets.

Many people have a tale to recount, as you have either been robbed of your article, like a cell phone, or your money. These boys are most active when there are shortages of vehicles, warranting scrambling for transport. They pretend to be part of the scramble while ripping their victims off their hard-earned belongings. This is painful!

The question is: for how long do we have to go before something is done about these potential threats in our society?

My fear is we are heading for the scenario Nigeria finds itself in, where these area boys have become a danger to state security, as they are used by individuals for their selfish gain.

I therefore appeal to the police to consider this issue, even if not for anything else, but for the benefit of us, the disturbed, helpless passengers.
