Gambia too strong for Mauritania

Monday, July 14, 2008
The Gambia under 20 team came from behind to beat Mauritania 3-1, to maintain their fiery run in the qualifying round for the 2009 African Youth Championship finals to be hosted in Rwanda. The Darling Scorpions scored three second-half goals to progress to the next stage of the qualifiers on aggregate 4-1.

Mauritania went into the game needing to cancel out the one goal deficit they conceded during the Banjul first leg tie, and they got it as early as the 7th minute - courtesy of striker Omar Faal.

The visitors rallied and the reward came in the 54th minute when skipper Pa Modou Jagne converted a spot-kick to put The Gambia on level terms.

Five minutes later, Real de Banjul striker, Ebrima Bojang, gave the Darling Scorpions the lead and his second goal in the 73rd minute effectively put the game beyond repair for the home side.

The Gambia now await, in the next stage of the qualifiers, the winner in the Ghana - Angola match.
