Ports Authority nail own coffin

Gambia Ports Authority will join Interior FC in the second division league next season, after all the results went against them on Saturday.

The Ferry Boys needed all the three points against Gamtel while hoping that either Bakau United or Sea View slip. But Sea View fetched the maximum points against the already relegated Interior at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium, and with Bakau United and Sait Matty-Africell sharing the spoils  at the Serekunda West mini-stadium, Ports Authority knew that even a win at the Independence Stadium would not have spared them.

The FA Cup champions could, however, only manage a goalless draw against Gamtel, who were only playing for pride.

Caretaker coach Faraba Fofana told Observer Sports that the shocking setback is a reward for the team’s poor performance.

“We played equal number of matches as other teams. They played better and scored goals, and we did not. To cut a long story short, Ports Authority FC have performed poorly and we have been rewarded,” he said.

Fofana stepped into the shoes of the former coach, Ebrima Cham, who was earlier sacked for what the club management described as a deteriorating performance.

And the caretaker coach believed that he came at a time when the damaged had already been done, though he will still shoulder all the blame.

“To be honest I would take the blame, but when I came in, I took over a team that was totally dispirited and lacked confidence. So it was virtually impossible to revive the situation though I had some time to remedy it.”

He further extended the blame for the failure to the players and the entire technical staff, noting that the club management has always motivated them and thus should not have any share of the blame.

“We owe a lot to our management. The problem is the technical team and the players. The players we have now are no more the players they used to be two seasons back.”

“We don’t score goals, and if you don’t score, how do you expect to win? I have been working on scoring since I came in. Do I have to get into the pitch and score for them?” he queried.
