Kindly allow me space in your widely read newspaper to thank the above mentioned Marathon Run organising committee members for their sustainable hard work and selfless service to their communities.
These organising committee members have established an excellent relationship for the past four years supporting and learning from each other. Last year, both events turned out very successful. There is every reason to commend them for their commitment and efforts in ensuring that the annual events are always successful.
The events bring together many people and allow them the chance to express their physical fitness and talent. What makes it more fascinating and unique each year is the involvement of traditional activities which of course make everyone feel good, and the fact that the funds raised during the events are used to support community projects.
Therefore, the general public is invited to participate and philanthropists are kindly requested to support both organising committees to achieve their objectives. For the Njawara organising committee, I wish to appeal for the event to be organised outside the rainy season for that will prevent any failure due to rains.
I would suggest that the event be organised in February - March 2009 and that the funds raised be used to sponsor a farm for the 2009 rainy season. It will enable the organising committee to have starting capital after the sale of the harvest to organise the 2010 event.
Following the success of one farm in Njawara, the Marathon Run organising committee can sponsor more farms in different villages near Njawara. Thus, the project will enhance self sufficiency in food production by the youths for their communities. It would also complement the call by His Excellency President Jammeh for the youths to engage in active farming. I have no doubt that Brufut Mrathon Run Association will support the initiative.
