New front against illegal dumping

Thursday, August 7, 2008
Conscious of the fact that the issue of garbage collection and its management constitutes not only a veritable challenge but also a real threat to public health, the Federation of Senegalese Organisations in The Gambia (FRSG) has embarked on an initiative that is meant to open a new front in the fight against illegal dumping.

As a result, the initiators of this project expressed the need to address the issue of garbage collection.

In a report sent to the Daily Observer,  FRSG hailed Operation Clean the Nation (OCN), initiated by President Yahya Jammeh and effected each month by the general public, and emphasized the need to multiply the collecting sites.

It is against this background that the said organisation seized the opportunity to sensitise the masses, especially women and pupils at schools, so as to disseminate information pertaining to this issue.

According to the report, to fully implement this dynamic project, the federation has appointed three commissions such as a commission for organisation, commission for finance, as well as a commission for information, communication and sensitisation.

FRSG, the report added, will deploy the necessary logistics in order to implement sustainable solutions to the recurrent problem of refuse management.

As the project will kick-off on Saturday, in Bakau, FRSG will install 20 garbage containers in strategic locations of Bakau such as the Atlantic Road, Fajara Total to Cape Point, from the IBC Bank to the stadium, as well as in Newtown from Observer Junction to Sabena.

While maintaining that the project is meant to promote President Jammeh’s ideas, the report explained that it is also an effort towards African integration, as OCN deserves to be emulated by other countries.
