The Rev Fr Peter Jammeh, a Gambia Catholic priest based in Ghana since 2006, is presently on a two-month home vacation.

Rev Jammeh was born in Farabanta, Western Region in 1970.  He attended the village school and later St. Peter’s High School, Lamin.  He studied for the priesthood in Ghana and Nigeria. He holds a BA degree from Nsukka University in Nigeria and an MA in Theology from Duquesne (Spiritan) University in the United States.

Rev Jammeh is a member of the Holy Ghost Congregation – a missionary order.  He was ordained priest in July 2006, together with his confere, the Rev Fr Michael Gomez, at a ceremony in the grounds of St Therese’s School, Kanifing.

As member of a missionary order, Rev Jammeh is liable for posting anywhere in the world.

The Holy Ghost Missionary Order has been active in The Gambia since 1848.  The early arrivals were mainly French.  Later Senegalese Spiritans joined them.  The Irish fathers arrived in 1905 and a few are still here. 

Besides the two Gambians already mentioned, there are two other Gambian Spiritans viz:  the Rev  Fr Gabriel Gomez of Lamin, presently in the United States, and the Rev Fr Louis Mendy of Kunkujang, who served in Sierra Leone and is now in charge of the Bakau Parish.  Fr Louis also doubles as head of the Spiritans in The Gambia.
