Monday, September 15, 2008
Following the recent arrest and detention of four Nigerians, who were accused of being in possession of 647 false travellers’ cheques (Thomas Cook and American Express travellers’ cheques), the Gambia Police Force has called on the public to surrender the fake cheques apparently floating around town.

According to reports reaching the Daily Observer, the police have ordered all individuals who obtained these fake travellers’ cheques between September 2nd - September 8th 2008 to surrender them to the nearest police station.

Speaking to the Daily Observer, ASP Sulayman Secka, the public relations officer of the GPF, said the police have come to understand that these false cheques might have disastrous consequences on the Gambian economy if used in the markets, banks, and other areas.

The police spokesperson emphasised that anybody who bought the false cheques starting from the number BL056.459.172 between September  2nd to September 8th, 2008, should surrender them, concluding that the full cooperation of the general public is highly solicited.
