Wednesday, April 15, 2009
Senior officials of the Alliance for Patriotic Re-orientation and Construction (APRC) party recently began a sensitisation campaign for party members across the country aimed at sensitising them on the newly revised APRC party constitution, which seeks to promote accountability, transparency and good governance.

The latest meeting was held at the Kanifing Municipal Council grounds, last Monday evening. The delegation of the executive of the APRC was headed by Hon. Yankuba Touray, secretary of state for Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters, who is also the national mobiliser for the party.

Speaking at that meeting, SoS Touray said the APRC party had deemed it necessary to revise its constitution in a bid to promote the democratic principles of good governance, accountability and transparency. He highlighted some effects of low voter turnout in some constituencies during election time, urging party supporters to re-double their efforts and cover those areas or overcome those challenges.

SoS Touray also noted that the APRC party is poised to improve the living standards of Gambians and contribute immensely to the socio-economic development of The Gambia. He called on party members to obey the guiding principles set aside in the revised constitution and to continue supporting President Jammeh and his government. Making a presentation on the revised constitution, SoS Touray revealed that a big meeting will be organised on April 24th, 2009, where all the wards, regional and constituency representatives of the APRC party will gather for a proper sensitisation of the revised constitution and work to pave the way forward.

For his part, Ismaila Sambou, secretary of state for Local Government and Lands, advised party supporters to rally behind President Jammeh and his government “for continued peace, progress and prosperity.” He also advised the gathering to follow the guiding principles laid in the revised APRC constitution which he described as the “Holy book of the APRC party.”

Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, majority leader and NAM for Serrekunda East, and Hon. Kalipha  Jammeh, NAM for Bakau, all expressed similar sentiments. The meeting was attended by Hon. Sheriff Gomez, secretary of state for Youths and Sports, APRC Yai Compins, councillors, National Assembly members, Alkalolu in the Kanifing Municipality, and a cross section of the youths and women. Yankuba Colley, mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, chaired the ceremony.
