Wild Nianija hippo killed

africa » gambia
Wednesday, April 15, 2009
Following rising alarm over threats from hippopotami on rice growers and residents in Central River Region North, a notorious wild hippo is reported to have been killed by some white men who are runnning a hotel in Nianija, last Monday, at Bambally Village in Sabach Sanjal District.

According to our Janjangbureh correspondent, the hippo which weighed 5 tons was killed after several unsuccessful attempts. Allassan David Cham, the chief of Nianija, commended the people of the area, pointing out that that the hippo killed was not only destroying their rice fields but was also killing their cattle. He said the elimination of this dangerous animal will greatly help in reducing destruction in their rice fields.
