The Gambia Armed Forces got off to a winning start in the 3rd Edition of the West African Liaison Office (WALO) Championship currently underway in Guinea Conakry with a 3-2 victory against Nigeria on Saturday.
Nigeria twice came from behind to level the scores before they eventually succumbed to the determined champions. Buba Sama put the Gambian soldiers ahead just one minute into the start, but Nigeria levelled the scores through Lalah Yacinth in the 22nd minutes. Two minutes after, the Gambia Armed Forces restored their lead - courtesy of Modou Gaye’s powerful header from a close range.
The Nigerians again rallied to cancel out the advantage before the first half ended 2-2. Just 10 minutes into the second interval, however, Sama sealed the tie in his side’s favour with his second of the day. The Gambian team will return to action today [Monday] with a clash against Senegal before rounding up their group campaign against Mali. Elsewhere on Saturday, hosts Guinea trounced Sierra Leone 5-0, while Burkina Faso merged as 2-0 winners against Ghana in Group A clashes.
