Brøndby may sell Ous Jallow, others

Danish premier tier club, Brøndby IF, may have to sell some of their big names at the end of the season to balance the books, and the Gambian international Ousman Jallow is considered as one of the key players that could fetch the club a considerable sums on the international market.

The Danish club have put themselves back into the Super League’s elite this season, but the team’s chief executive says success has a price. Hermann Haraldsson said that the club’s economic situation means that getting top kroner for the team’s best players on the international market makes the most sense for Brøndby’s financial stability.

‘We don’t have a billionaire like Chelsea’s Roman Abromovich behind us, so we have to put aside the romanticism and admit that our business philosophy is to buy, develop and then sell off players at a profit,’ Sporten.dk quoted Haraldsson saying. In the previous two seasons Brøndby finished sixth and eighth in the league standings - mainly because the club didn’t have the same level of talent, according to Haraldsson. ‘We weren’t able to make the monster sales that our league colleagues could,’ he said. The money earned from such deals is typically used by Super League clubs to invest in developing promising young talent or to pay older international Danish players wanting to end their careers at home.

But with the team in the title hunt this year, Haraldsson said any player sales would probably not take place until after the end of the season. ‘We have the marketable goods, but I also think we have a team that can win the league championship this year. So it’s too early yet to sell.’ Over the past few years Brøndby has been able to earn several million kroner by selling off players such as Daniel Agger (to Liverpool) and Johan Elmander (to Toulouse). Current players for the club that could fetch considerable sums on the international market are defenders Max von Schlebrügge and Thomas Rasmussen, midfielder Samuel Holmén and possibly young Gambian forward Osman Jallow who was acquired from the Asian giants Alain FC last season.
