Thursday, February 19, 2009

In their attempt to revive cricket, the oldest sporting game in The Gambia, the National Cricket Association is planning to move cricket to the doorstep of Region Two, North Bank Region in March and Lower River Region in June.

According to the president of the cricket association, Mr. Johnny Gomez, this initiative is geared towards making cricket one of the most popular games in the country and ensuring that cricket is played from Banjul to Basse. Mr. Gomez said that, they are working on logistics to make this initiative possible, which in return will bolster the standards of the national league.

As Banjul has already made a mark in the field of cricket, the cricket association intends to organize a zonal cricket competition for Banjul North, South and Central in the next two weeks. Mr. Gomez further revealed that they have made a dispatch to all primary schools in order to organize an inter school cricket league but have not received any reply from them as of now. Mr. Gomez stated that all primary schools should have their own cricket teams.

Mr. Gomez informed Pointsports that his association is preparing for the U19 and U13 international cricket competition in Mozambique and Ghana respectively for the International Cricket Council qualifiers.

In light of this, Mr. Gomez is soliciting help from all stake holders and the general public to come to their aid in their efforts to revive cricket in The Gambia.
