Monday, January 26, 2009

The Centre for Youth, Women and Child Development (CYWCD) on Sunday awarded scholarships to six students from different schools in the country. The scholarships were made possible through the grants received by the organization from the Plymouth-Banjul Challenge to implement a project called ‘run for your knowledge’.

The six students were part of the lot who took part in a marathon  from MDI junction via the Taiwanese Embassy to Gambega. As the six best runners of the event, they were automatically awarded the scholarship for one academic year at a ceremony held at KMC grounds later in the day. The scholarship winners were students of Greater Banjul, Tallinding and Bakoteh Upper Basic schools. Meanwhile, 20 other students were also given certificates for their participation.

Speaking at the occasion, the public relations officer of the organization, Korka Jallow, reaffirmed his organizations continued support to the young people and women of the country. He appealed to the general public to support the centre.

Kebba Danso, chief executive officer of CYWCD, expressed his organizations commitment to seeing the young people access quality education and promote sports in the country. He said they also strive to engage in business enterprise development to create employment for young people and women.

Other speakers included Pa Malick Ceesay, executive secretary National Youth Council, and Mustapha Ajata Gibba, a representative of Gambia Athletics Association.

Bakary Badgie chairman Kanifing Municipality Youth Committee encouraged the beneficiaries to make the best use of the scholarships. He also thanked CYWCD for the initiative.
