Bakau Newtown Lower Basic School recently received 50 combined tables and benches as well as 5 cupboards, worth D91,500 from a Holland foundation called Support and Build The Gambia Up, headed by Peter Berk.
The materials were presented to the school by Amadou Bah, the coordinator of the foundation in The Gambia and a parent at the school. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Sainabou Lowe, head mistress of the school, thanked Peter Berk and his foundation through Amadou Bah. She described the donors as good friends of the school, adding that this gift came as a surprise to them. She expressed delight at the gesture and appealed for more support to enable them to roof some of their classrooms that leak during the rainy season.
Lowe also said that the donated furniture was enough three classrooms of the school. For his part, Cherno Jallow, chairman of the school’s Senior Management Committee, commended the donors for their benevolent gesture. Amadou Bah, the coordinator of the foundation, said his foundation is supporting Bakau and Banjulinding Health centres and the Kunkujang and Bakau Newtown Lower Basic Schools. He promised that his foundation will continue to support the school and expressed hope that they will begin a fruitful partnership with the school.
The ceremony was attended by Dodou Barrow, chairman of the Learners Welfare and School environmental committee; Karamo. Bajo, chairman of the Teachers Professional Development Committee; Binta Njie, deputy headmistress of Bakau Newtown LBS, Leadership and Management Committee and students of the school.
