Bakau on illegal fishing campaign

Thursday, February 5, 2009
The people of Bakau last Sunday met to find solutions   to the illegal fishing practised by some fishermen in the area.  The meeting was held at the town’s Bantaba.

Speaking to the gathering, Alhagie Ousman Bojang, the facilitator of the meeting, said that the people of Bakau, especially fishermen, should be sensitised about the effects of illegal fishing. According to him, some fishing nets and hooks used by some fishermen are illegal. He added that they would also inform the Department of State for Fisheries and the National Environment Agency (NEA) about this.

“Our environment is degraded and our mangroves are lost, so now is the right time to protect our environment,” Bojang lamented. For his part, the Alkalo of Bakau Wasulung Kunda, Musa Sidibe, revealed that the government itself has instituted laws against illegal fishing. He urged members of the community to serve as watchdogs so as to stop the practice.
