The Regional Health Management Team of the Central River Region last Monday embarked on district authorities’ sensitisation on food hygiene and safety.
Food hygiene means conditions and measures necessary or the production, processing, storage and distribution of food designed to ensure a safe, sound and wholesome product, fit for human consumption.
The CRR regional health officer, Karamba F Keita, said the purpose of the sensitisation is to give the people first hand information as they are planning a massive food inspection in the region.
He revealed that the Public Health Act of 1990 clearly states that all foods must be prepared and sold in a hygienic manner, and the consumption of such foods should not endanger the lives of the consumers or cause any threat to public health. He called on the district authority members to help them register success in the operations.
The regional public officer, Jaligeh Nget said the Public Health Act mandates the public health officers to screen any one who prepares food for commercial purpose. He added that the screening must be carried out every six months in order to ensure that the vendors maintain the required food safety standards.
