The first female Taiwanese volunteer in the person of Ellen Chang who has worked with the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital for the past six months is set to leave for her native land today.

Having enjoyed a cordial relationship with her colleagues at the hospital, particularly the section she worked, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Madam Chang last Friday hosted a dinner for her colleagues and friends.

The dinner was held at Shanghai Chinese Restaurant in Kololi. 

Speaking to this reporter at the dinner, Madam Chang said, “I know most of these people never have the opportunity to test Chinese food that is why I decided to invite them to this meal. It’s sad for me to say goodbye but also its time for me to go back.”

She used the opportunity to thank her colleagues at ICU for their support.

When asked as to why she decided to serve as a volunteer rather than be paid, Ellen said, “money cannot give you everything. I have worked in the United States and also in Taiwan but I realize that money cannot give one everything you need. Humanity is something that I cherish. She hailed the cooperation between The Gambia and Taiwan and said that it needs to be maintained.

For her part, Mrs. Ritta Amaefula, a Nigerian Technical Assistant who also worked with Ellen at ICU, thanked the Taiwanese volunteer for the marvellous dinner. “Today marks a historic moment for the staff of ICU and it’s born out of co-operation without which we wouldn’t be here today,” said Madam Ritta.

 Mrs. Riita, who was supposed to leave for her country last Tuesday after completing her mission, said, “it’s rather unfortunate that I am leaving almost at the same time as Ellen”.

She advised the remaining staff of ICU to remain united in their work.

Mr. Babucarr Ngum, Public Relations Officer of RVTH, thanked Ellen for her contribution to the quality health service delivery of the hospital. He prayed for her to have good health and a long life for the services she has rendered to humanity.
