Gambia-Libyan Relations Deepen

Monday, August 31, 2009

It’s an undisputed fact that over the years the relationships between the Gambia and the Great Socialist Libyan Arab Jamahiriya have been very much deepened.

This could be attested in many ways, such as the exchange visits by the leadership of the two countries, people-to-people interaction and the numerous Libyan largesse to the Gambia. One such donation was made on Thursday 27th August 2009.  On this particular day, two cargo planes landed at the Banjul International Airport from Tripoli.

The plans were loaded with 70 tonnes of rice and milk earmarked for the poor and the needy in the country, all in the spirit of the Holy month of Ramadan.

The aircrafts were met on arrival by the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and staff of the Libyan Embassy.

Speaking to the Point Newspaper, the Libyan Ambassador to the Gambia H.E Dr.Ali Muhammad Dukaly, stated that the Ramadan gift is a gesture from the people of Libya to the brotherly people of the Gambia.

According to the Libyan diplomat, the gesture is a tradition from the people of Libya to help their brotherly African people, especially during the Ramadan.  This year’s donation came at the time when Libya is marking 40 years of Al-Fateh Revolution, which brought Brother Gaddafi to power.

The Gambian leader, President Yahya Jammeh yesterday left the country to attend the celebrations of the Al-Fateh Revolution in Libya and a summit on peace.

Just last month, the Libyan leader Brother Maumarr Gaddafi visited the Gambia to attend the 15th Anniversary of the July 22 Revolution.

At the moment, a contingent of Gambian soldiers is already in Tripoli, together with their counterparts from across Africa for the great event.

Back home in The Gambia, the Libyan embassy is organising a reception at the Corinthian Atlantic Hotel in Banjul to mark the day.
