Heavy Rains Destroy 32 Compounds In Brikama

Monday, August 31, 2009

At least 32 compounds comprising 150 households have been damaged by heavy rains in Brikama, according to an assessment data from the Gambia Red Cross.

The affected families, 20 of whom were displaced, are currently being accommodated in schools and with neighbours, says Mr Omar Sanyang of the Gambia Red Cross, who spoke to our reporter in an interview.

According to Mr Sanyang, this was revealed in a survey conducted in Brikama and its catchments area.

He said up till now surveys are being carried out by members of the Red Cross Society, noting that a donation of 40 mattresses and bed nets was made by members of the Red Cross in Brikama to some of the affected families.

According to him, some of the causes of these floods are due to unnecessary blockade of the roads, which in some instances had made it difficult for water to penetrate.

He went on to call on the Physical Planning Department to look into the matter and see how best a solution could be found.

Mr. Sanyang added that the current situation of the victims is very horrible as, according to him, some of the victims who take temporal shelter with neighbours might be sleeping on floors, and thus expose to the scourge of malaria.
