Officials of the Chailey Newick Colts Gambia Support Group, a registered charitable organisation based in the UK, recently called on the governor of the Central River Region, Alhagie Ganyie Touray, at his office in Janjangbureh.
The purpose of the visit was to inform the governor about the organisation and their areas of interventions in the country. The group was led by their Gambian counterparts, Lamin Kuru Kongira and Sulayman Solomon Jallow. Foday Chorr, one of the pioneers of the organisation, recounted the history of the organisation, noting that it was established two years back with the aim of kicking malaria out of The Gambia by donating mosquito nets to communities. He hailed the efforts of their British counterparts.
Simon Ramm, the chairman of the organisation said it has three areas of intervention - education, health and agriculture. According to him, some time back, they donated medical kits, pedal bikes, blood pressure machines and nets to Janjangbureh Health Centre. He added that they are also going to sponsor the refurbishment of the maternity ward at the health center, and also employ a cleaner and a nurse for the facility.
In response, Governor Alhagie Ganyie Touray, commended the organisation for their humanitarian gestures to the people of his region.
He said that a country which neglects education, health and agriculture cannot progress and these areas are among the top priorities of President Jammeh’s administration. He then observed that such interventions will not only improve the education, health and nutritional status of the people in the region, but will go a long way in complementing the government’s efforts. He then assured them of his office’s support at all times and quickly called on other philanthropists to emulate them.
