The promotion of a clean and healthy environment worthy of human habitation, has always been the utmost priority of the Kanifing Municipal Council, particularly under the leadership of Major Yankuba Colley.
In respect of these, the council will now shift the task of waste management in the municipality to the newly established Kanifing Integrated Waste Management Company for efficient and effective service delivery. This follows the arrival of the head of the expatriate staff from Green Seeds Incorporated, a waste management consultancy firm in Canada.
The company which shall henceforth be responsible for the collection, disposal and management of waste in the Kanifing Municipal Council is the product of a public private partnership between the KMC and Canadian Green Seeds Incorporated that seeks to institute an effective waste management mechanism in the Municipality.
This agreement was officially entered into by the two parties at a signing ceremony held at the KMC Head Offices on 13th February 2009 and within its framework, the KMC will transfer it entire cleansing service fleet and essential staff of the unit to the company. Green Seed, under the partnership, shall provide financial resources and an additional fleet of plants and machinery for proper waste management.
At the start of operations, minimal charges will be levied on households and compounds as is already happening with sporadic small size private waste collection companies. Although such companies will still be allowed to operate, they shall be obliged to pay for the use of facilities at the Bakoteh dump site which shall be managed and maintained by the Kanifing Integrated Waste Management Company.
Meanwhile, the KMC sought to reassure residents that the partnership was forged in the collective interest of the people of the Municipality and that it will ensure regular and intensive collection of waste from households across the jurisdiction.
