Talking about resort destination, beach cannot be overemphasised. Beach is part of the place tourists enjoy and experience when they are on holiday at any destination.
Both tourists and non-tourists have inclination towards beach. It is a destination for everyone to relax and merriment. Beach is one thing that holidaymakers often look forward to experience at their stay in any hotel closer to the beach or at the tourist development area it is incumbent that we do everything to make it safe, secured against drowning and other hazard alike. It is important that each and every hotel located near the beach should have lifeguard staff and erect lifeguard tower for their lifeguard staff.
Lifeguards service is very invaluable at the beach and seaside. They patrol places where the public goes swimming including indoor and outdoor pools, beaches and lakes. This is why they are responsible for making sure that not only tourists but also people visiting and using the beach are safe in and near the water.
Lifeguards duties involve keeping a close watch over the beach, pool and the users. They anticipate problems and prevent accidents by keeping a keen eye out for swimmers and fish hunters in difficulties in order to prevent drowning tragedy. Another thing they are good in that most of the swimmers or fish hunters most time do not take serious is intervening to prevent unsafe swimming and fishing when the red flag is on. They are good in this because they can easily identifying emergency and take appropriate action at the beach very quickly. Their best action period is carrying out rescues from water especially when anyone is in danger and giving immediate first aid to any casualty.
Beaches and lakes in The Gambia have become safer than in the past. This is due to the fact that lifeguards are on 24 hours parade of beaches especially the hotels that are in TDA. They continue to show their commitment in saving life of guest accommodates in the hotels. Most of these lifeguards are volunteers they need more supports and encouragement from the government and hotel proprietors.
Alan Hewitt, a retired police sergeant from South Yorkshire police England, was a guess in Kairaba Beach Hotel in the month of February. He was happy to commend Bafoday Jammeh who showed a great perception and presence of mind well beyond the normal course of duty with courage and bravery when he rescued two guess who drowned in the beach near their hotel on February 6 around 1630 hour. Also Bernard Mendy a lifeguard volunteer at Lemon Creeks, he has saved over 8 tourist lives in Bijilo. No provision for some of these volunteers. They go everyday to the beach under their own steam of fares. Retired sergeant Hewitt said, "if these lifeguards rescued of tourists had occurred in the UK I am sure these lifeguards would be in line to receive a bravery award from the Royal National Lifesaving Society or Royal Humane Society."
Beach lifeguards work in teams. They patrol the beach and continue to advise people when and where they can swim safely. They make sure that people do not stray outside safe areas where there may be hazards, such as submerged rocks and strong currents. These areas are often marked out using a series of flags on the beach or roped off using buoys.
Lifeguards engage by the hotel always pay special attention to inflatable such as dinghies, which can be easily carried out to sea. They also need to know about local tides especially the area they are attached, As a lifeguard you need to be a strong swimmer physically fit and full of skills in the sea. Good vision and hearing with knowledge of first aid. Moreover a good lifeguard must be able to concentrate for long period both at quiet and noisy environments and be a good observant. In addition, a lifeguard must possesses ability to deal with difficult people tactfully and firmly. This is important as you are bound to meet different people everyday.
Lifeguards equipment involves life-saving materials such as ropes; poles; dinghy; torpedo buoys among other materials. Lifeguards need adequate training, as beach is becoming a reckoned place for not only the tourists but also young children as where they have time out with their families and friends during weekend, holidays, and festive period and especially in the summer.
During summer lifeguards play important role in educating people about water safety. Some beach lifeguards volunteer to give lectures to school children during the winter. They may also be involved in hiring out surfboards and rowing boats among other things to tourists.
