Mawdo Marena, a Gambian based in  Germany, last Monday donated medical items worth over half a million dalasi to Bansang hospital in Central River Region at a presentation ceremony held at the Central Medical Store premises in Banjul.

The donated items included Endocopedocopy medicine, drugs, mattress, among others. Handing over the items, Mawdo Marena revealed that his aim is to uplift the standard of living for the Gambian community adding that, his humanitarian gesture started since the year 2000. He added that the donation meant for Bansang hospital came following his recent visit to the hospital where he saw the need to assist them.

Mr Marena then expressed appreciation on the rapid developments in The Gambia under President Jammeh’s leadership, adding that all and sundry need to support him on his endavour for the socio-economic development of this country.

He thanked  all his friends in Germany for their wonderful assistance. Speaking on behalf of the secretary of state for Health and Social Welfare, Abdoulie Camara, deputy programme manager of Eidemology and disease, thanked the donor for complementing government’s efforts on her quest to bring health to the door steps of every Gambian. According to him, health is very important and a dynamic sector which needs the support of all and sundry.

He observed that the donation is timely and will go a long way towards the community at large and urged others to emulate Mr Marena.  Dembo Jawara, chief executive officer at Bansang hospital, described the donation as another milestone for the hospital. According to him, Bansang hospital was built in 1939 and is one of the oldest hospitals in the country covering two major regions - Central River and Upper River Regions and neighbouring villages and towns in the Senegalese southern region of Cassamance, Mali, Guinea and Guinea Bissau.

Mr Jawara on behalf of the hospital management board, staff and community of Bansang, assured the donor that the donated items will be properly utilised. The occasion was chaired by Musa Saine, senior supply officer, Central Medical Stores at the Department of State for Health and Social Welfare.
