When Africell, one of the country’s leading GSM companies, launched its wind-up torch light as part of their marketing strategy, many people didn’t comprehend the logic behind such a move.
In an epoch where life on Planet Earth is being increasingly threatened by the destruction of the existing ecosystem, Africell’s initiative seems to help Gambians to gradually adopt a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. Considering that environmental technology, also known as green and clean technology, covers a range of equipment and techniques that can be applied to environmental protection in a very broad sense, the wind-up torch light constitutes a clear indication that it is high time for companies from different sectors to start raising awareness of the many ways everyone can go about greening their lives.
In other words, companies operating in The Gambia should explore ways and means to develop their potential to conserve the natural environment (with a low environmental impact), enhance and protect biodiversity, improve water quality, offer resource efficiency, minimise waste, deliver a form of sustainable development, and decelerate the negative affects caused by climate change. Well done Africell for paving the way forward!
