President Yahya Jammeh, will be sworn-in today for a third consecutive term in office. The ceremony will take place at the Independence Stadium, Bakau and comes barely two months after his landslide victory in the September 22 Presidential Elections.
President Jammeh swept the polls with more than 67 per cent of the votes cast - an unprecedented achievement in the political history of this country.
As part of activities, a State Banquet was held yesterday at the Kairaba Beach Hotel which was attended by three African heads of state who arrived yesterday.
The three heads of state namely, President Girma Wolde-Giorgis of Ethiopia , President Faure Gnassingbe of Togo and the leader of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Ould Muhammed Vall were received upon arrival at the airport by President Jammeh.
The Vice President and Secretary of State for Women’s Affairs, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy received the Prime Minister of Taiwan, Su Tseng-Chang, a special envoy of President Chen Sui-Bian of Taiwan . Secretaries of State, the Chief Justice, members of the National Assembly, senior government officials, security chiefs, local chiefs, and diplomats, among other dignitaries, joined the Gambian leader in receiving his visiting counterparts.
Various Cultural troupes and musical bands, as well as representatives of the Ethiopian, Togolese, and Mauritanian community provided a warm welcome to the African leaders. At the time of going to press, the Vice Presidents of Sierra Leone, Iran and Liberia were yet to arrive.
