Prime Minister Su Tseng-Chang of Taiwan, presented a cheque for US$30,000 to Dr Tamsir Mbowe, Secretary of State for Health and Social Welfare at a ceremony held at the Taiwanese Embassy yesterday, shortly after his arrival in Banjul.
The sum is earmarked to boost current efforts of the Gambia government in combating HIV/Aids in the country.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Mr Ho, Taiwanese Minister of Health, said the co-operation between The Gambia and Taiwan is important for the peoples of the two countries. Mr Ho commended the Gambian government for the support given to Taiwan in the international arena.
Responding to the gesture, Health and Social Welfare Secretary of State Mbowe thanked the visiting Prime Minister for the gesture, adding that the two brotherly countries share a common desire for the development of their peoples. He informed the gathering that health is high on President Jammeh’s development agenda, saying "he believes that without good health, there can be no development". According to him, this was why President Jammeh made significant investments in the health sector, especially in terms of infrastructure, human resource and biomedical equipment. "For the first time in our history, haemodialysis is available in The Gambia for both the rich and the poor", he revealed.
Dr Mbowe further commended Taiwan for standing by The Gambia in diverse areas of the health sector, such as human resource, equipment and drug supplies. He disclosed that HIV/Aids is a worldwide problem, and that the disease knows no boundaries. He stressed that the input of all nations in the fight against the pandemic is crucial. "This is the philosophy of Dr Alhaji Yahya Jammeh. It’s why he still calls on the international community to recognise the existence of Taiwan as a nation", he said.
Dr Mbowe then pointed out that the world stands to gain by accepting "the great potential of Taiwan, as a sovereign nation of industrious sons and daughters".
Dr Patrick Chang, Taiwanese Ambassador to The Gambia chaired the presentation ceremony.
