Ousman Jatta, alias Rambo, the Councillor of Old Bakau ward who was recently released from over a year’s detention, on Friday, 19th October 2007, appeared at the Kanifing Magistrates Court. According to information reaching this paper Mr. Jatta received a call from Bakau Police requesting him to appear in court for previous charges preferred against him.
However at the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court, Mr. Jatta, who was accompanied by some of his staunch sympathises and admirers, was apparently informed by the court authorities that the relevant case file was not in their custody that particular day. Consequently Mr. Jatta’s counsel, Lawyer Darboe, asked him to return home.
Before the arrest and subsequent detention without trial of Mr. Jatta, he was standing trial for uttering undesirable statements before the A.U. Banjul Summit in 2006. Mr. Jatta pleaded not guilty to the aforementioned charge but was nonetheless later whisked away by security operatives on 23rd September 2006. He was since then detained at various locations around the country until 12th October when he was unconditionally released.
