Police poised to curb road accidents

The Traffic Unit of The Gambia Police Force recently visited and held talks with transport union officials in four major car parks country wide.
The tour which was meant to brainstorm on issues leading to fatal road accidents covers Barra, Kerewan, Farafenni and Kaur.

Speaking to the Daily Observer following his return, Sulayman Secka, public relation officer of The Gambia Police Force said the tour was meant to put in place effective measures to dwindle the high rate of fatal accidents on the high ways, cause by careless drivers, which claims the lives of innocent pedestrians and computers plying the high ways in recent years.

According to him, the increase in the number of accidents on the rural high ways is due to over speeding and parking of vehicles on the high ways with mechanical problems without reflectors.

Inspector Secka added that the neglect of traffic sign boards and regulations is another cause of fatal accidents. He called on drivers to make good use of the traffic sign boards on the high ways to curb the rate of accidents.
According to him, drivers during the tour expressed concern on the increase in the number of vehicles that ply the North Bank Region road to Basse. “The drivers expressed delighted for the initiative taken by the Office of the Inspector General of Police for providing enough traffic personnel on the North Bank high way.
