As parts of their familiarization tour of media chiefs and institutions, the executives of the newly formed Young Journalist’s Association of The Gambia (YJAG) yesterday paid a courtesy call to the Managing Director of The Point Newspaper Mr Pap Saine. The meeting was held at his office along Garba Jahumpa Road, Bakau.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Nfamara Jawneh the President of YJAG gave a brief history of the association.
According to Mr Jawneh, the association was formed two months ago with the aim of promoting the wellbeing of young journalists in the country and to foster unity among them.
He added that the meeting was also meant to impart first hand information about some of the constraints been faced by young journalists in their various media houses.
He appealed to the Point boss to provide them with support.
The YJAG executive also used the opportunity to invite the Point MD to be one of the guests of honor at the official launch of YJAG which will be held in few months time.
Similar sentiments were expressed by Aminata Sanneh and Isatou Baldeh, treasurer and 2nd vice-president of YJAG respectively. They commended the Point boss for being the first person to grant them and audience.
Mr Pap Saine in response assured the YJAG of his offices support both morally and financially. “Our doors are open for all journalists and despite our meager resources we will do our best to support you”.
According to the Dean of correspondence, its not easy to be a journalist as it requires dedication and hard work. He encouraged the YJAG executive to always work as a team and share their experiences with one and another. He also advised the young journalists to be always punctual at work and dress well.
The veteran journalist used the forum to appeal to the Gambian Government, through the Honorable secretary of State for Information Communication and Technology Mrs. Neneh Macdoull Gaye, to create a faculty of journalism at the University of The Gambia. This would be helpful to the growing number of media houses and practitioners in the country.
In another development the YJAG executive, later in the day, also had an audience with the president of the Gambia Press Union, Mr Madi Ceesay at his Media Agenda office in Churchill’s town.
Speaking at the meeting YJAG president Mr Nfamara Jawneh, briefed his counterpart from the GPU about YJAG. He informed the GPU president that YJAG is out to complement the GPU’s efforts.
