St Mary’s College students visit Observer

A delegation of 6 students from St Mary’s College in Maryland, USA, who are currently on a working visit to their Gambian counterpart- University of The Gambia (UTG) on Wednesday March 7, paid a courtesy call on Dr Saja Taal, Managing Director of the Observer Company and a part-time Lecturer at the UTG at his Observer office in Bakau.

The group was led by Mr. Babucarr Jallow, a specialist in culture, who introduced them to Dr Taal. Mr Jallow said the purpose of their visit to The Gambia is part of an orientation for the students.

Welcoming the student delegation, Dr Taal urged them to feel at home and enjoy the peaceful and lovely atmostphere of The Gambia, and then assured them of his office’s open door policy. He briefed them on the history of the Daily Observer Newspaper since its inception in 1992, and its relationship with other local media houses which, he described as very cordial.

He said the Observer’s stands towards contributing effectively to the development, promotion and preservation of Journalism in The Gambia, through capacity building of media practitioners, among others. He then took the opportunity to brief the visiting students on different topical issues in The Gambia, which include positive insights on the history of The Gambia’s politics, socio-economic and cultural development, and the rapid and unprecedented developments taking place under President Jammeh.

Dr Taal told the students that President Jammeh’s treatment of HIV/Aids and Asthma is a realistic break through. He finally urged the students to explore The Gambia and acquaint themselves with the first hand knowledge on the impact of herbal medicines in The Gambia and the world at large.
