Mr. Daniel Able-Thomas, a veteran tennis player and one time President of the Gambia Table Tennis Association, was on Tuesday night attacked by a two-man gang as he drove off to his house from the Independence Stadium, Bakau.

The ugly incident happened few metres from the Independence Stadium.

Explaining his account to the Daily Observer, Mr. Thomas said: “It was on Tuesday at 10:00pm when I was closing from training at the Independence Stadium. As I joined the main road to the traffic light, I was halted by two men at around Bahai Centre. When I stopped, the men rushed and opened my door demanding my mobile phone. Before I could even resist, the men pulled out a knife with the intention of stabbing me should I resist their demand.”

He continued: “I came off the car and managed to grasp the cutlass I hide in the back booth of my vehicle before the robbers took to their heels.”

Thomas, who managed to escape uninjured, said he later reported the matter to the Police.

He advised fellow drivers, particularly those who trek during the night, to always lock their doors and raise rear windows during night.
