GPA, Hawks in FA Cup Final

The finalists of the 2007 Gamtel sponsored FA were known over the weekend after the semi finals bouts.

The 2006 league champions, GPA, would face the FA cup titleholders, Hawks in the grand final on Sunday August 12, 2007.

GPA made it to the final last Friday after beating the 2007 National league title winners, Real De Banjul.

In a well-contested match played at the Independence Stadium on Friday, GPA defeated Real De Banjul 2-1.

Real De Banjul first opened the scores in the 13th minute through Momodou Lamin Singhateh, giving hopes to thousands of Real fans, which stormed the Independence Stadium since the early hours of Friday afternoon.

But their hopes were short lived with the equalising goal scored in the 36th minute by Alagie Fatajo alias Butut, who beat Goalkeeper Alagie Abdulie Jobe alias Toldo on a free kick.

At that junction, the encounter became more interesting as both teams opted for the offensive in the search for a second goal.

Real De Banjul players became more aggressive forced the central referee Baboucarr Jallow to release some yellow cards and one red card to Omar Jarjue of Real De Banjul in the 54th minute.

GPA head coach Alagie Sarr made valuable chances with the coming of Abdurahman Dampha and Hatab Badgie.

His option was rewarded with a fantastic goal scored by substitute Hatab Badgie in his torch of the ball in the 72nd minute.

Real de Banjul fought very hard but GPA defense made of some Gambia U-20 players in the likes Mandou Bojang and Furmus Mendy watched carefully up to the final wrestle.

In the second semi final played yesterday at the Independence Stadium, the Gamtel sponsored FA Cup titleholders, Hawks booked their place to the final for the second time in a raw after beating Bakau United 1-0.

Edward Sarr scored the only goal of the match in the 46th minute.

Bakau United missed the equalising goal in the 79th minute when Pa Amadou Gai alias Daddy Gai missed a penalty, which was superbly, saved by Goalkeeper Robert Badgie alias Papis.
