Gambia turns 42 tomorrow

After gaining her independence from British colonial rule on the 18th February 1965, the Republic of The Gambia will be 42 years tomorrow Sunday, February 18, 2007.

As usually celebrated, this historic occasion will be observed country wide, simultaneously, in all Administrative Regions. There will be a march-past of school children in all the Administrative Regions. (Kanifing Municipality will observe the day at the Serrekunda West Mini Stadium, Banjul Municipality will gather at the July 22nd Square, Western Region will gather at Brikama, North Bank Region at Kerewan, Lower River Region at Mansakonko, Central River Region at Janjangbureh and Upper River Region at Basse).

Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh, President of the Republic of The Gambia is expected to deliver his state address on the night of Saturday 17th February, 2007 through The Gambia Radio and Television Services.

At all administrative areas, the Governors and Mayors are expected to deliver the address of President Jammeh.

As part of the celebrations of the Independence anniversary, there will be a presentation of vehicles and scooter by the Netherlands-Gambia Foundation at Bakoteh SOS Village at 10:00 am today Saturday February 17, to be followed by a reception hosted by His Excellency, The President of the Republic of The Gambia and Madam Zainab Jammeh at the State House grounds in Banjul from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

On Sunday 18th February, Independence day, there will be prayers in all churches to be followed by a parade of Security forces and march-past of school children in Banjul and in all administrative Regions under the chairmanship of the Mayors and Governors to commemorate the celebration.

On Monday 19th February, there will be official opening of the Omakah Hotel in Sukuta at 11:00 am to be followed by a twinning ceremony between Siffoe and the City of Bellac in France at Siffoe village at 4:00 pm. This will be followed by the official opening of Access Bank on Kairaba Avenue on Tuesday February 20, at 11:00 am.

Secretaries of State, Speaker of the National Assembly, National Assembly members (NAMs), Ambassadors, Security Chiefs, Chiefs, Alkalos and other dignitaries are expected to grace the ceremonies.
