Gambia U-17 Crack Out

Thursday, October 19, 2006
The CAF U-17 defending Champions, the Gambia, were cracked out of the next championship following their 2-0 defeat by Senegal.

The team, who traveled to Dakar with a 2-0 deficit in the first leg, in Banjul, were expected to turn down the result in Dakar. But in Saturday’s game at the Stade Demba Diop, the Lionceaux of Senegal made Gambias mission impossible by opening the score in the 7th minute by Sheikh Amadou Gueye, one of the foreign based player and scorer of the first goal in Banjul.

The goal came from a bad defending of Alieu Musa Drammeh in the left back, in which the Senegalese captain and play-maker Cheikh Sy sent a fantastic cross for Sheikh Amath Guyeye who beat Gambian keeper Kebba Sidibeh. After the goal, the Gambia team controlled the game and dominated the Senegalese team despite playing on an artificial turf.

The Gambia created lots of chances but all were wasted in the six yard box. The first half ended 1-0 in favor of Senegal. The Senegalese came back in the second half high and hard on the Gambia players.

Their tactic was rewarded by the second goal in the 47th minute scored buy Sega Ibrahim Cisse, from an offside which was interpreted differently by the second assistant.
After that goal, tension mounted in the field of play with players opting for hard tacklers, resulting to five yellow cards. Alieu Musa Drammeh, Paul Jatta and Amadou Sanyang were caution in the Gambia team while, Momodou A Diouf and Ndiaga Dieng also received yellow cards in the Senegalese team.
Despite all efforts, the Gambian could not break the Senegalese defence up to the final whistle.

At the end of the match Gambian players affronted the central referee resulting to a red card to Ousman Marong of the Gambia.

Meanwhile Senegal will take on Tunisia in the last round of the qualifiers for Togo 2007. Tunisia eliminated Mauritania on Saturday, 1-0 in Mauritania after a 1-1 draw in Tunis.
