Illegal Immigration showing No Sign of Let-Up

Gambian authorities’ current onslaught on illegal immigration may not be showing any sign of let-up but what is equally clear is that there appears to be no end in sight to the drive of mainly youths to brave the seas on what has in recent years proved to be a perilous voyage.

In what could be described as a manifestation of the complexity of the problem, a middle-aged man was yesterday sent to the State Central Prisons in Banjul for his role as an agent to facilitate the ferrying of would-be immigrants to Spain.

The convict was arraigned before magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of Kanifing Magistrates’ Court for acting as a go-between for an individual who reportedly transports people to Spain through Morocco.

Meanwhile, according to magistrate Jammeh, the action of Mr Sanyang to facilitate the transportation of people to Spain through dangerous and risky routes was illegal.

He added that Sanyang must be alive to the fact that he was risking lives by his action. He then vowed that he would not exercise mercy on anyone brought before him for a similar offence as the law, he noted, had to take its course.

Mr. Sanyang was said to have collected 3000 Euros from three people with a view to assisting them to travel to Spain through Morocco.
