In Kanifing Fire Outbreak

Three more victims of the Kanifing Estate fire outbreak have reportedly breathed their last yesterday at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital in Banjul, bringing the death toll to five.

They are Amat Jagne, 42, a Red Cross staff said to be doing a Diploma course in Management at MDI, Demba Ndow, 48, a senior Accountant with GPTC and part time lecturer at MDI, and Momodou Lamin Touray, alias Benjamin, 32. The two others, Mustapha Kanteh and Ousman Bidwell, died last Saturday.

Two other victims from Mr. Jagne’s household, Abdou Demba, the family driver, and Morr Ceesay, are still hospitalised.

Mr Jagne is said to be survived by two wives and five kids while Demba Ndow is said to be survived by a wife and six daughters.

A family member of late Demba Ndow, Aja Bintou Faye, said to be his sister, said: “Demba’s demise has a destructive effect on the family as he is the only brother we have, thus being the sole bread winner.”

For his 16-year-old daughter, Ndey Yassin Ndow, Mr. Ndow was not only a father but also a friend. I pray for him to rest in peace. We’ll really miss him,” she said amidst obvious grief.

It would be recalled that Mr. Demba Ndow had once been a great player for Wallidan Football Club.

Yamundow Jagne-Jobe, the late Amat Jagne’s elder sister, said: “Amat died in active service, rendering service to the community. He is so much committed to Red Cross.”

The deceased were all laid to rest yesterday.
