The Gambia Cellular Company, GAMCEL, the country’s National GSM Operator, on Saturday donated four computers and 200 lab coats worth over D260,000 to the University of The Gambia Medical Students’ Association (UniGaMSA).

Speaking at the presentation ceremony held at the School of Nursing in Banjul, Mr Almamy Gassama, Senior Marketing Manager of Gamcel, said that in addition to the donated computers, Gamcel had also subscribed for a one-year free internet access that could be utilised by the students. “This goes along with regular maintenance at the expense of Gamcel,” he added.

He further noted that “Gamcel is aware” of the task and resources involved in training students to become medical doctors, hence the donation.

Abdou K. Sillah, president of the medical student association, noted that though training people to become medical doctor is expensive but such an expense could not be compared to the cost of saving lives.

Calling on other Parastatals, NGOs and philanthropists to emulate Gamcel’s gesture, Sillah said that some of the pressing needs of the students were textbooks, accommodation and transport.

Lamin S. Jaiteh, Registrar of the University of The Gambia, thanked Gamcel for the donation.

Other speakers on the occasion included Dr Ousman Nyang, Provost School of Medicine and Allied Health Science, and Babucarr Ngum, Public Relations Officer of the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital.

Mr Miniru Savage chaired the occasion, whilst Chiquita Jones gave the vote of thanks.
