Setback to Casamance Citizens Trial

Sunday, October 21, 2007

The trial of the eight Casamance citizens charged with acts of terrorism, spying, receiving stolen property and unlawful possession of Gambian national identity cards suffered yet another setback yesterday at the Banjul Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate B.Y. Camara.

The case could not proceed as the state prosecution was not in court. The suspects were escorted to court by heavily armed personnel of the Police Intervention Unit.

Since the case was mentioned in court before on 1st October this year, it has been suffering series of adjournments.

It could be recalled that the eight Casamance citizens were earlier on arraigned before the Banjul Magistrates’ Court for the said offences to all but one of which they pleaded not guilty.

The case is now scheduled for hearing on 23rd October 2007.
