Gambia climb up in African rankings

Thursday, October 25, 2007

The Gambia have climbed up one place   further in the world football governing body's African rankings for October 2007. The Scorpions moved up from 33rd to 32nd position. The Gambia, who were earlier ranked at 37th position, have made a great move in the past couple of months, thanks to their inspirational performances in the recently concluded African Nations Cup qualifiers.

Though their Ghana mission was unaccomplished, the Scorpions undisputedly proved a hard nut to crack in the face of all-time Africa’s big guns like Guinea and Algeria in the 2008 Nations Cup qualifiers, and their heroism did not go unnoticed as evident in their current position in the rankings.

Nigeria maintained their place as Africa 's highest ranked team rankings. The Super Eagles also moved up four places on the overall rankings from 23 to 19, while second-placed Cameroon moved two places up from 25 to 23.

The biggest mover in Africa were Kenya leaping 18 places on the world list, thus becoming the number 22 side on the continent.
